Orlando Shooting Caused by Terrorism and Mental Illness

As the nation tries to cope with yet another tragedy, the issue of gun control continues to heat up. The far left claims that we basically need an outright ban on all firearms while the conservative right feels that a complete ban would be an infringement on the rights of Americans. While there is both pro and con to each side of the argument, I think it needs to be reiterated that there is no simple solution in this matter. As a person who really isn’t “gung ho” on guns, I will say I have had some enjoyable times legally shooting one at a range, but that is as far as it went. Certainly there is a large majority of citizens who use their firearms recreationally and responsibly.
The crux of the problem is, there are still many states with very loose requirements to purchase a gun and also an increasing black market for firearms. There needs to be a drastic overhaul in the way these guns (especially high-caliber assault weapons) and ammunition are controlled. The world does not need to see another Omar Mateen. An assault rifle should have never gotten into the hands of a mentally ill and radicalized person. Unfortunately it is extremely difficult to restrict these types of people from access to these weapons at all times. My prayers go out to the victims in Orlando. May they rest in peace.
